Final Touches: Path

Final Touches celebrates the tiny details that make an app a delight to use. Not the marquee features, but the fun, thoughtful bits that make you smile. The final touches.

Path for iPhone is a private social network, if you will, that lets users share messages, photos, video, and lists of beloved books, music and movies with a select group of friends and family. 1 While my interest in Path has waxed and waned, the app’s great looks have never faltered.

Path’s design team deserves kudos for its hard work on this standout app, and my favorite little bit is an animation that accompanies the share button. To post an update to your followers, tap the share button in the lower left. Five happy little icons spring forth: photo, location, music, quote or sleep. That’s great, but dismissing them is the real fun.

Tap anywhere outside of those icons and watch as they briefly spin in place before snapping back to their home beneath the share button. I’ll admit that I sometimes tap share and then dismiss the icons, just so watch them spin and disappear. It’s a fun little feature. Well done, Path.

Fantastical is a calendaring app for iPhone and the Mac from Flexibits. I’ve been using it happily since its initial release (here’s my review of version 1.1 at TUAW). There’s a lot to like in Fantastical, but my favorite little touch is in the iPhone version’s Day Ticker.

The Day Ticker appears at top of the screen and lists the current day plus the two before it and the two after. If you’ve scrolled to a day other than the current day, tap the title bar just above the Day Ticker to jump back to today.

But what if you tap it while you’re looking at the current day? The circled date in the Day Ticker “jumps” forward ever slightly as if to say, “That’s today. You’re here.” It’s a simple little prompt that’s subtle in its effectiveness. I love it. Well done, Flexibits.

flyolliefly

Twitterrific 5.0 for the iPhone added a slew of new features to the veteran Twitter client. My favorite little touch is the Ollie animation that accompanies the pull-to-refresh gesture. As you begin the gesture, a tiny egg appears. Continue the motion and the egg cracks open and Ollie emerges. He flaps his wings as the feed refreshes and finally disappears with a pop.

It’s just plain fun and I enjoy watching it every time. Good job, Iconfactory.
