IBM has released Minds of Modern Mathematics for iPad (free) in celebration of Ray Emaes‘ centennial (born 1912). The app is a modern version of an art installation created by Charles and Ray for IBM in 1961 called, Mathematica: A World of Numbers… and Beyond. It featured two 50-foot walls and other interactive displays that invited visitors to explore celestial mechanics, the Mobius band, probability, topology, the laws of minimal surfaces, projective geometry, and multiplication. It was the longest running corporate-sponsored art installation in the world when it finally closed on January 31, 1998.
I’ve admired Ray and Charles Eames for many years. I’m thrilled to have an example of their work — the first major project produced by Eames Office — on my iPad. I imagine Ray and Charles would have loved it.
