Mailbox launched this week, and thousands of users are waiting for their chance to play. I’m among them, but my enthusiasm is waning.
First, Mailbox is restricted to Gmail. The developers note that that limitation is temporary, but for now it means I must use two apps to check all of my email, as opposed to Mail.app‘s unified inbox. Also, since the service stores your messages [1. Scroll way down to paragraph 13 in The Verge’s review], it seems to create a second point of entry to my Gmail account for online ne’er-do-wells, not to mention advertisers. Finally, until Apple allows system integration, there’s no Notification Center alerts or banners.
It looks pretty, but right now I’m not sure I’ll use it.
