Mashable reports that the trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” set a download record for iTunes. The trailer was released exclusively to iTunes and attracted 12.5 million views within 24 hours. It beat the previous download record holder — Marvel’s Avengers trailer — by 2 million views.
I’m still not sure why Apple maintains the movie trailer site (or why people like Batman movies, frankly), but both obviously draw much traffic.
Update: BJ Nemeth explains why Apple maintains the movie trailers: “Apple rents & sells movies online. If it’s the go-to site for movie trailers, it’ll likely encourage additional spending. Apple also hosts trailers as previews for the movies they rent & sell in iTunes.” Good points.
